There comes a point in your self-love journey where the question shifts from How do I stop obsessing over food and my body-image? to How do I take care of my health in a way that doesn't promote diet culture? If you've spent years untangling yourself from diet culture, caring for your health can feel surprisingly complicated. You might want to eat more nourishing foods, move your body consistently, or create healthier habits, but worry that those choices will pull you back into restriction, food guilt, or body obsession. So how do you pursue health without dieting? In this conversation, we're exploring what it looks like to care for your body from a place of self love rather than control. Through personal stories and practical examples, I share the three things that have helped me redefine health as a form of self-care. Especially after going through eating disorder recovery. Because contrary to what diet culture teaches us, loving your body and caring for your health are not opposing goals. In fact, they often go hand in hand. Whether you're recovering from disordered eating, healing your relationship with exercise, or simply trying to find a more sustainable approach to wellness, this conversation offers a gentler path forward. Let’s revisit some reminders about… Why pursuing health can feel scary after healing from diet culture The difference between gentle nutrition and restrictive eating How to choose foods without labeling them "good" or "bad" Why joyful movement matters more than forcing yourself through workouts Questions to ask yourself before starting a new health habit How to build trust with your body again Navigating health goals without making weight loss the focus Why self compassion creates more lasting change than self-criticism How self love can become the foundation of your health journey If you've ever felt torn between body acceptance and health, this episode is your reminder that you don't have to choose. You can pursue health without diet culture, trust your body, and create habits that support both your physical and mental health. Everywhere you turn, someone is selling you a new anti-aging hack—IV drips at the gym, $50,000 longevity clinics, genetic panels, peptides, stacks of supplements. In this episode, I get honest about what the research really says about longevity, metabolism, hormone balance, and digestive health—and where the hype is way ahead of the science. Key Points from This Episode Why the modern longevity industry worries me Health span vs. lifespan: the question we should be asking The unsexy things that genuinely move the needle Why it's never too late to start This episode gives you the "what" and the "why" behind real, evidence-based longevity so you can stop chasing every new "anti-aging" protocol and start focusing on the habits that actually support your hormones, energy, metabolism, and digestive health long term. Have you ever come home from a trip feeling bloated, constipated, foggy, run down, or completely exhausted? In this episode, I'm talking with Dr. Monisha Bhanote about what really happens inside the body when we travel — and why symptoms like low energy, digestive issues, stress, bloating, and sluggish recovery are not random. Dr. Bhanote brings a unique perspective to cellular health because she has spent years studying cells, tissues, and disease patterns under the microscope. We talk about how travel can impact digestion, immunity, focus, mitochondrial energy, and recovery — and why your gut can even experience its own version of jet lag. If you struggle with fatigue, brain fog, IBS, bloating, constipation, weight loss resistance, perimenopause symptoms, or feeling "off" after travel, this episode will help you understand what your body may be trying to tell you. Key Points • Why travel can disrupt your gut microbiome and trigger bloating, constipation, and digestive issues. • How airplane travel may affect brain fog, focus, and energy. • Why cortisol, dehydration, caffeine, alcohol, and poor sleep can drain your metabolism. • What cellular health has to do with feeling better and recovering faster. Listen In This conversation will help you see travel fatigue in a whole new way. “Stories … are powerful tools that can help us make sense of our lives,” says physician-scientist Maya Adam. She now combines visual storytelling and health education to create animations that go beyond the barriers of language and culture to convey important health messages. The subject matter ranges from vaccine acceptance and addiction to mental health and nutrition. These emotionally engaging narratives – often without a single spoken word – are more effective than traditional pamphlets and lectures, Adam says. Visual stories have the potential to achieve “near-universal understanding” that can support better health outcomes, she tells host Russ Altman on this episode of Stanford Engineering’s The Future of Everything podcast. Fatigue can feel confusing when you're getting sleep but still waking up tired, irritable, foggy, or emotionally drained. If you're a high-achieving woman juggling work, family, stress, hormones, gut health, and the mental load of "doing it all," this episode will help you understand why your exhaustion may be about more than sleep. In this conversation, I'm joined by Dr. Nikia Smith, a board-certified anesthesiologist who has experienced burnout twice. We talk about the slow build of burnout, why so many women miss the early signs, and how chronic stress can impact energy, hormone balance, metabolism, digestion, brain fog, and weight loss resistance. In this episode, you'll hear: • Why fatigue that sleep doesn't fix may be a sign of emotional and nervous system overload. • The early "simmering pot" signs of burnout high-achieving women often ignore. • How irritability, decision fatigue, and autopilot living can signal deeper exhaustion. • Why self-care alone is not enough without boundaries, values, and support. • How learning to say no and delegate can help protect your energy and health. This episode is for the woman who looks like she has it all together but feels depleted behind the scenes. If you've been blaming yourself for low energy, brain fog, stress, digestive issues, or hormonal imbalance, this conversation will help you see your fatigue differently — and understand what your body may be trying to tell you. Today, I am delighted to welcome Emily Sadri, a board-certified women’s health nurse practitioner and certified nurse-midwife, also trained in functional medicine. Emily is the founder of Aurelia Health, a private women’s health practice in the Van Aken district of Shaker Heights, Ohio, offering telehealth services specializing in hormone therapy and weight-loss support for women ages 35 to 55. As a leading hormone expert, she has built her practice around a hormones-first approach. In today’s conversation, Emily explains the differences between being a nurse practitioner and a midwife, and we discuss nurse practitioner training, scope of practice, professional support, anticipatory guidance, and the limitations of conventional midlife care. Emily also shares why she prioritizes precision-oriented, personalized care, the value of Mira monitoring for precision hormone replacement therapy management in perimenopause, key hormonal changes she sees in early perimenopause, the impact of cyclic, static, and physiologic dosing of HRT, the influence of progestin IUDs, trends in healthcare, and less common reasons why women in midlife tend to become weight loss resistant. Stay tuned for an insightful conversation on hormones, precision care, and supporting women through perimenopause and midlife. IN THIS EPISODE, YOU WILL LEARN: How women's health nurse practitioner training differs from midwifery, and how midwifery shaped Emily’s professional philosophy and ethics Why women need to take ownership of their health throughout every life stage The importance of moving beyond treating symptoms by using comprehensive lab work to identify broader hormonal and metabolic patterns The value of using Mira, an at-home hormone monitoring system, to follow hormone patterns throughout an entire menstrual cycle, rather than relying on isolated laboratory measurements Why Emily believes in looking at hormone patterns rather than progesterone decline or isolated estrogen levels when making hormone replacement therapy decisions How static, cyclic, and physiologic HRT differ, and why Emily believes physiologic dosing deserves greater consideration. Why treating hormones in isolation often fails to address the bigger picture, particularly during perimenopause The importance of women being fully informed when considering hormonal birth control and intrauterine devices Factors beyond sarcopenia, nutrition, sleep, and stress that could contribute to weight loss resistance Bio: Emily Sadri Emily Sadri is a Board Certified Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner, Certified Nurse Midwife, and hormone expert who founded Aurelia Health, a modern concierge telehealth company that serves women navigating perimenopause and menopause. Show Notes Page: https://www.thehowofbusiness.com/611-duncan-gill-practice-owner/ How psychiatrist Dr. Duncan Gill transitioned from employee to entrepreneur and built a thriving behavioral health practice serving children, teens, and families. Many highly trained professionals discover that technical expertise alone is not enough to build a successful business. In this episode, Henry Lopez speaks with Dr. Duncan Gill, founder of Direction Behavioral Health, about his journey from practicing psychiatrist to entrepreneur and business owner. Duncan shares how frustration with bureaucracy and a desire to serve patients differently led him to launch his own behavioral health practice. They discuss the challenges of transitioning from clinician to business leader, including hiring and managing employees, navigating partnerships, delegating responsibility, monitoring key performance indicators, and building systems that allow the business to grow beyond the founder. Duncan also shares why creativity, adaptability, and a willingness to take calculated risks have been critical to his success. He reflects on the lessons he learned from building a team, expanding facilities, and creating a practice that serves children, teens, and families while providing him with the freedom to pursue other interests, including music. This conversation offers valuable insights not only for healthcare professionals but for any entrepreneur seeking to build a business that can grow beyond their direct involvement. Healthcare professionals should not underestimate their ability to become successful entrepreneurs. Dr. Duncan Gill is a board-certified Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist and the founder of Direction Behavioral Health. Text us a comment or question! Most people think the biggest health problem in America is obesity. Coach Kevin disagrees. In this powerful episode of The Over 50 Health & Wellness Show, we tackle a health crisis that almost nobody is talking about - the Great Muscle Shortage. While the media obsesses over weight loss, calories, and shrinking the number on the scale, millions of adults over 50 are quietly losing something far more important… Strength. Muscle. Capability. Independence. And that loss may be one of the biggest threats to healthy aging. In this episode, Kevin explains why muscle isn't just about looking good - it's one of the most important predictors of longevity, metabolic health, resilience, and quality of life after 50. If you've been focused on getting smaller, this episode may completely change how you think about health and fitness. In This Episode: 💪 Why muscle loss is America's invisible health crisis ⚖️ Why weight and health are not the same thing 🧍 The truth about "skinny fat" and hidden fragility 🫀 Why muscle is one of the most important organs of longevity 🚶 How modern life is quietly stealing your strength 🏋️ The biggest myths keeping people weak after 50 ✈️ Why strength is really about freedom—not fitness 📈 How to build your "Muscle Retirement Account" 🔥 The mindset shift that can transform your health for decades Key Takeaway Most people spend decades building a financial retirement account. Very few people spend the same effort building a physical retirement account. Every strength workout is a deposit. Every protein-rich meal is a deposit. Every year of consistency is a deposit. You've heard of elderberry benefits for the cold and flu season. Did you know that it could actually impact your brain health, inflammation, and longevity? That's exactly what the latest research is showing, and I had to get my friend Emilia Rizzuto back on the show to break it all down. Emilia went from a Crohn's diagnosis at 15 and cycling through immunosuppressants for decades, to becoming a certified health and wellness expert and CEO of All Things Elderberry. If you care about aging well, staying sharp, and building a body that works with you, not against you, this episode is for you. We break down a simple morning elixir routine that takes thirty seconds and covers hydration, gut health, and blood sugar balance all at once. Coffee First Thing, Fasted Workouts, and Why Your Morning Routine Is Wrecking Your Hormones in Midlife Morning fatigue isn't just about bad sleep — the first hour of your day shapes your hormone balance, metabolism, brain fog, and energy. Have you ever done everything "right" — fasted workout, coffee on an empty stomach, fasting until noon — and still felt more exhausted and anxious than ever? In this solo episode, I break down why those wellness habits are cortisol-wrecking chaos for a midlife woman. They were built for a twenty-five-year-old man's body, not yours. I'll walk you through six science-backed things to do before 9 AM that actually match your physiology, plus a twenty-minute version for busy mornings. Key Points The one simple swap that changes how women feel more than almost anything I recommend — and why order matters more than the habit. Why that "I can't function without coffee" feeling isn't an addiction — it's a hormonal clue most women miss. The reason your thyroid labs keep coming back "normal" while you still have every symptom of an underactive thyroid. How one client lost weight and got her energy back with six small morning swaps. We connect the dots between cortisol, the HPA axis, blood sugar, thyroid function, and metabolism — so you can finally understand why the "healthy" things you're doing might be working against you. Stop wasting time (and money) on products that don't work. My Trusted Brands Guide is the exact list I share with my private clients — the skincare, supplements, food, and wellness tools that have been tested and proven to deliver results. No fluff. No guesswork.
